The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has notified the KP1-5 Project that they will be the team to activate Navassa Island (KP1) in January 2015.
The DXpedition will be a maximum of fourteen days. The exact dates in January will be determined by USFWS mission requirements and weather windows.
Our experienced team of fifteen is complete and is ready for the challenge. The weeks ahead will be extremely busy as the team has less than 90 days before the DXpedition comes on the air.
January is the month of minimum bird nesting activity and this is the primary reason USFWS is asking that the operation be completed during that month. However, the weather is unpredictable in January and because Navassa is surrounded by cliffs, this may preclude a safe landing by boat. For safety reasons and in order to maximize our time on the Island and on the air, a helicopter operation is planned. Navassa is over 100 miles (160 km) from the nearest helicopter staging point and as many as ten round trips will be required at the beginning and end of the operation. Obviously, this means that there will be a significant cost for activating this #1 ranked DXCC entity.
In the next few weeks, we be working with USFWS and as details firm up, we will issue periodic press releases. Check our webpage, the KP1-5 Project for more details of the operation and how you may financially support this DXpedition.
The KP1-5 Project team has committed to fund 50% of the total costs. We are hopeful the DX community will fund the remainder.

Intervention of the Radio Club d'Haiti

Bekanntlich beansprucht Haiti die Insel Navassa als eigenes Territorium. Der Radio Club d'Haiti hat uns gebeten, seine Sicht der Lage zu veröffentlichen, umso mehr als er sich durch einen Affront beleidigt fühlt. Wir entsperchen dem Wunsch, ohne für diese oder jene Seite Partei zu ergreifen.
It is well-known that Haito claims Navassa Island as part of its own territory. Radio Club d'Haiti has asked us to publish their point of view, particularly since they feel offended by a webmail comment. We publish these documents - as it fits for an archive like ours: unbiased.

Lage und Geschichte

Kontinent: Nordamerika - Lage: 18N 75W, FK28LJ - Zonen: WAZ 8, ITU 11 - Zuweisungen: KC4, KP1 - IOTA NA-098

Navassa (englisch Navassa Island, französisch Île de la Navasse oder La Navase, kreol: Lanavaz oder Lavsh) ist eine unbewohnte Insel im Karibischen Meer. Sie liegt auf etwa 1/4 der Strecke von Haiti nach Jamaika und gehört als eine der United States Minor Outlying Islands zu den Außengebieten der Vereinigten Staaten. Die Insel wird auch von Haiti beansprucht, auf dessen Inselsockel (Hispaniola) sie liegt.
Navassa liegt etwa 50 km westlich der Tiburon-Halbinsel Haitis und etwa 160 km südlich der Guantánamo-Bucht auf Kuba. Navassa stellt, ähnlich der Insel Henderson im Pazifik, ein so genanntes „Gehobenes Atoll“ dar und erreicht eine Höhe von bis zu 77 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel. Die von einem Korallenriff umgebene Insel hat eine Fläche von 5,4 km² sowie eine Küstenlänge von 8 km. Die Insel ist nicht dauerhaft bewohnbar, da es keine natürlichen Süßwasserquellen gibt. Seit 1999 ist die Insel ein Naturschutzgebiet, es besteht ein strenges Betretungsverbot. Die Lage der Insel, 160 km südlich vom Militärstützpunkt Guantanamo Bay, ist für die USA strategisch interessant.

"I began amateur radio at age 14 in 1950 with the call W4QCW. In 1954 I was on the first Navassa Island DXpedition as KC4AB. In 1967 I guest operated at EA9EJ in Rio de Oro and in 1969 I was a member of the K4IA/KC4 Navassa Dxpediton. That same year I earned the #1 5BDXCC award. In 1977 I became W4DR. My wife of 57 years is N4CFL and a surviving son is KK4HJ. In 2001 I was a member of the YK9A DXpedition to Syria. This same year I was awarded the first, and as of 2007, only Clinton B DeSoto Cup for the most documented Band/Entities (DXCC countries) on 160 through 6 meters. I am a member of CQ Magazine's DX Hall of Fame and qsl manager for Jon Rudy who has operated from A2/ZS5UZ, C91CO, DU9/N0NM, 3DA0CA and 4W3ZZ. My profession is Dentistry and I have served on the faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry for 54 years. Navassa, 125 Meilen SO von Guantanamo, wurde 1856 mit dem Guano Islands Act von den USA beansprucht: "Weist eine unbewohnte Insel Guano auf, ist sie nunmehr Territorium der USA." Bis das Dynamit seinen Siegeszug antrat, baute die Baltimore and Navassa Phosphate Company die Bestände ab. Als die Arbeiter in den späten 1880erjahren den Verwalter der Insel umbrachten, dekretierte der Obersten Gerichtshofs, dass Navassa ein Schiff in Internationalen Gewässern sei und daher in dieser Sache das Marinerecht wegen Meuterei anzuwenden sei. Der Leuchtturm, das erste Lichtsignal, das aus dem Panamakanal auslaufende Schiffe auf der Route nach Europa erblicken, wurde ursprüngich mit Acetylen befeuert; heute geschieht dies mit Batterien, die in regelmäßigen Abständen erneuert werden müssen. 1956 wurde für die geplante, dann aber abgeblasene Invasion der Dominikanischen Republik ein geheimer temporärer Marinestützpunkt auf Navassa errichtet.
Ende 1970 sprach mich Dick, W0EXD, auf dem 20-m-Band an und bat um meine Hilfe. Er sagte, er gehöre zum NAMI, dem Navy Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, das eine Studie über die Ziegenpouplation auf Navassa durchführen wolle. Es sei bei den 700 Ziegen DDT aus den USA nachgewiesen worden - übertragen durch die Fische, die von den Vögeln gefressen wurden, und deren Ausscheidungen wiederum als Guano das Gras erfassten. NAMI war finanziell bestens ausgestattet und verfügte über die RD-5 der NAS (Marinestützpunkt) Pensacola für den Flugtransport des Teams, etwa 12 Personen, und der Ausrüstung nach NAS GTMO (Guantanamo), aber sie wussten nicht, wie sie von dort nach Navassa kommen und nach einer Woche wieder zurückfahren konnten. Sie wollten zwar Funkgeräte mitnehmen, aber weder eine DXpedition ankündigen oder auch durchführen, da sie mit der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit voll ausgelastet seien. Ich wandte mich an den Admiral, was nicht weiter schwer war, denn ich gehörte nicht nur zu seinem Stab, ich führte auch die phone patches für ihn durch. Er hatte uns wiederholt besucht und die Station besichtigt; er sollte also Verständnis für meinen Wunsch aufbringen, von Navassazu senden. Tatsächlich gab er seine Zustimmung für eine Unterstützung des NAMI und beauftragte mich, alles Erforderliche zu veranlassen.

Haiti beansprucht Navassa als L'Isle de la Navase für sich. Zur Untermauerung dieses Anspruchs wurde vom 19.-26. Juki 1981 die HH0N-DXpedition durchgeführt. Sie wurde nicht für das DXCC anerkannt. Jean-Robert Gaillard, HH2JR, der Präsident des Radio Club D'Haiti stellte DokuFunk seine auch in der HamGallery: ext. Link publizierte Erinnerung und eine Karte bei, in der Navassa als Teil Haitis eingezeichnet ist. Die QSL-Karten der Teamnmitglieder stammen aus der DokuFunk QSL Collection.
Erinnerungen an die HH0N DXpedition, 19.-26. Juli 1981
Im April 1981 erörterten wir im Club die Möglichkeiten einer Expedition nach Navassa. Wir wussten, dass Fischer aus der Region regelmäßig die Ile de la Navase anlaufen und hoffeten, auf diese Weise zu einem geeigneten Schiff zu kommen. Unsere Umfragen endeten enttäuschend: Die Überfahrt sei zu gefährlich. Uns wurde klar, dass die Anreise nur mit einem Helikopter möglich war. Jan Bernard Montes HH2BM (sk) schlug vor, Jean-Claude Duvalier, dem damaligen Präsidenten von Haiti, zu schreiben.
