*) Der erste Operator in Bhutan was Chhawna AC5PN. Gus' Manager E.C. "Ack" Atkerson "Ack" überrredete Chhawan, dessen Funkbude benutzen zu dürfen. Später wurde Gus der "radio engineer" des Königs und bekam den Auftrag, den Amateurfunk zu organisieren. Er entwarf ein Regionalnetz, bei dem sich vier Gebiete in seinem Haus in Thimpu schnitten: Gus konnte mit dem Zimmer auch das Rufzeichen wechseln. Mehr dazu: Amateurfunk in Bhutan
Gus richtete sein Schlafzelt in Bhutan nahe der Grenze ein und stellte auf bereits tibetanischem Gebiet ein Zelt mit der Station und einem Benzinaggregat auf. Das Terrain war in dieser Gegend zum Glück von Tibet her so unzugänglich, dass chinesische Truppen, hätten sie von seiner Anwesenheit erfahren, Gus erst nach Tagen erreicht hätten. "So war ich insgesamt fünfundfünfzig Mal in Tibet", erzählte Gus.
